People
put on weight in different ways. Some develop big thighs, others experience
expanding butts, while others may seem to pack on unwanted weight just about
everywhere. One area that’s particularly bothersome for a lot of people –
particularly men – is belly fat. Many otherwise fit-looking people are
sabotaged by an excess of belly fat which is often quite noticeable. The
following are among the worst foods you can eat if you are trying to eliminate
that stubborn belly fat.
1. Sugar
Who would have guessed, right? Well, it may be obvious to a lot of people, but it is still worth mentioning, since sugar goes by all kinds of different names these days. It can be listed on food labels as cane juice, dextrose, glucose, fruit juice, sucrose and a bunch of other names that might not equal “sugar” in the minds of many people. And then there’s high-fructose corn syrup, which is in a staggering variety of processed food items and is probably the worst of the worst where sugar is concerned.
2. Trans Fat
As the name suggests, trans fats aren’t just the typical fat you might get from animal sources. Trans fats are fats that have been manipulated by man, making them even worse than old-fashioned fats like lard or butter. The way these trans fats are manufactured results in a substance that the human body is not properly equipped to digest, leading to all kinds of health problems, including a protruding belly.
3. White Flour
Here’s another good example of a once perfectly good food that man has extensively engineered and manipulated. White flour is heavily processed, which has depleted its nutritional benefits drastically. You’ll find white flour in all kinds of processed foods, even ones you would not expect to contain any kind of flour at all. White flour is treated as a carbohydrate by the body and which it stores, and also causes a spike in blood sugar. It also has very little “staying power,” meaning that hunger returns a short time after it is eaten, which leads to more eating and a rapidly expending belly.
4. Fizzy Drinks/ Soda
Call it what you like, soda, soft drinks, pop, or tonic. These days they are just different names for the same dreadful brew. Soda has certainly never enjoyed status as a health food, but it’s worse than ever these days, due to the widespread use of sugar substitutes such as high-fructose corn syrup. Even “diet” soft drinks don’t live up to their name, and are much more likely to increase hunger after all those empty calories are consumed. If you’re going to swear off any particular thing in an effort to lose weight and be healthier, soda would certainly be very near to the top of the list.
5. Alcohol
We’ve probably all heard the term “beer belly.” Well, it’s a name that’s well earned, since consuming too much of any kind of alcohol tends to slow the metabolism, which makes it so much easier for extra pounds to stick around. Worse yet, alcohol tends to stimulate the appetite, which combines with the slower metabolism to make the nearly perfect recipe for packing on the belly bulge.
6. Salad Dressing
Salad is good, right? Actually it is, but it’s not the actual salad that’s the problem where weight gain is concerned, unless you are making salads out of candy. Salad dressings tend to have a lot of unhealthy ingredients, which are likely to promote weight gain. Don’t be fooled by “low fat” claims and other buzz words that manufacturers use to make their products appear more healthy. Even if the calorie count is lower, the unhealthy ingredients in most salad dressings are still unhealthy, and likely to add weight to your mid section.
7. Salt
Most of us Love salt. We pile it onto foods
like French fries, popcorn, vegetables and probably about a thousand other things. Salt can cause fluid retention when excess levels get backed up in the digestive system and the kidneys. One result can be increased blood pressure, which can lead to serious health problems that often go right along with being overweight. Too much can slow the body’s digestive processes down, and can result in weight gain.
